A rich tapestry: Petaluma Arts Center highlights beauty of Black art

“Black artists of Northern California,” highlights the works of 28 artists from around the Bay Area

The Petaluma Arts Center’s exhibition, “Black artists of Northern California,” highlights the works of 28 artists from around the Bay Area. For curator Denise Ward, it is a welcome chance to bring the legacy of these influential Black artists to the North Bay.

“Art has a way of being able to change your view on people that you don't know much about,” Ward said. “Because you have the opportunity to look at people differently through artwork. So that's why I brought the show here.”

Ward, herself an acclaimed Petaluma sculptor and jeweler, says the show was influenced by her personal experiences and the great artists who came before her. Her dedication to showcasing Black artists and their stories is evident in the thoughtful curation of “Black artists of Northern California,” which is a must-see for local art enthusiasts.

Each artist in the exhibit brings a unique voice and perspective, creating a rich tapestry of Black experiences and narratives. The variety of art forms and styles on display ensures there is something for everyone.
