Forest Unseen Curator Talk

  • Petaluma Arts Center 230 Lakeville Street Petaluma, CA, 94952 United States (map)

Curator presentation and Artist Panel Discussion.

Stefan Thuilot, curator of Forest Unseen, will present the California Forest Project, an ambitious and comprehensive photographic exploration of the state's diverse forest ecosystems. Through innovative large-scale photography, Thuilot captures the dynamic and multifaceted nature of these environments, often using "repeat photography" to reveal their changes over time.

Following the presentation, a Q&A session will feature the exhibition's participating artists—Adrienne Defendi, Christel Dillbohner, Charlie Levin, Rainey Straus, and Jennifer Tatum. The session will be moderated by Lisa Lightman, PAC's Chair of Exhibitions.

Forests are vital to life on Earth, supporting all living beings. While we deeply value them, global warming has turned forests into a double-edged sword, with increasing wildfires and environmental threats. Yet, despite these challenges, more people are drawn to California’s iconic, heritage forests. Every forest is remarkable— even the seemingly ordinary ones.

The artworks in this exhibition emerge from a cycle of long visits to the forest, followed by studio time that sparks new insights and deepens the evolving creative process. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in these forest-inspired works, which may offer a fresh perspective on future forest walks and inspire a deeper connection with the natural world around us.
