The Voice in the Hand: Book Arts and Printmaking
This exhibition highlights the unique tactile qualities, or "visual voice" of handmade books and prints. Unlike the digital images we encounter every day, each work presented here was hand-carved, etched, exposed, or drawn into a plate that was inked and pressed – using the weight of a printing press – onto paper, often one color at a time. The hand of the artist is evident in each piece in distinct ways; for example in the nuance of delicately scratched lines in the etchings by Elysabeth Cianci, in the careful ink application in the monoprint collages by Katherine Warinner, in the detailed carved marks in the relief prints by Edie Overturf, in the handset type inked and printed onto fabric in the quilts of Ingrid Ankerson, and in the folded forms of the collaborative set of books by Mariko Jesse, Yoonmi Nam, and Katie Baldwin.
The artwork selected for this show exemplifies the varied visual vocabulary inherent in printmaking and book arts. Just as no two voices are alike, each of these pieces reflect not only the visual choices of the artist – concept, colors, composition – but the very kinetic energy of their hand, captured in the act of making.
