Visual Thinking Strategies

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a core component of our arts education programming. It’s a cutting-edge, small group, conversation-based way to experience art-and other people-on an entirely new level.

VTS transforms the way students of all ages think and learn. Based in theory and research, our program uses skilled facilitation of visual art discussions to significantly increase student engagement, performance and enjoyment of learning.

Petaluma Arts Center have developed into the only regional resource in Sonoma County for VTS training with a team of 15+ VTS docents who share the VTS experience with nearly 1,000 children and adults each year.

Our regular collaboration with local schools has seen classroom field trips to our gallery doubling with each passing year. These classroom visits, coupled with our VTS-based “Look Club” events that coincide with our five annual exhibitions.

Aimed at developing creativity and thinking skills, VTS is an effective activity designed to build an art-viewer’s background knowledge and develop thinking skills that use detail to enhance understanding. By making simple non-lectured based inquiries, PAC’s VTS program creates an awareness-leveling opportunity for folks to engage in the art world from their own perspective – regardless of their prior knowledge and experience of the arts.
