Tidal Response: Coastal Marine Environments from Above and Below
Curator: Carin Jacobs
Exhibition Dates:  August 22 – October 21
Opening Reception:  August 19, 5 – 7pm

Tidal Response explores the intersection of art and science through a series of responses to coastal environments, with particular emphasis on Sonoma County. Some of these marine impressions are more literal– in Peter Connors’ case, displaying formerly living sea creatures as a medium in his delicate algae pressings; in Chris Dewees’ case, using sea inhabitants as part of his actual process of Gyotaku printing. Other works are more conceptual, as Richard and Judith Selby Lang repurpose objects found at the water’s edge to express both environmental philosophy and sense of place.

Collectively, these  artists,  Peter Connors, Chris Dewees, Courtney Mattison, Julia Edith Rigby, Judith & Richard Selby-Lang, Holly Sumner, and The Hydrous – some trained in fine arts, some in biology– enter into a dialogue with nature, and with each other, breaking down disciplinary silos and allowing for a more holistic and perhaps richer exploration of a complex ecosystem.
