Join us as we gather to get our hands in clay! Some experience is helpful in this supervised Open Studio for ages 16-adult. No sign-ups necessary, simply come and make pottery and sculpture by hand or with the potter’s wheel. * Only clay purchased through the Arts Center will be used.

Register now for a tie-dye workshop by Lind Speel, local artist and instructor who has been tie-dying since the 1960′s.  Have fun learning the techniques needed to produce beautiful pieces of wearable art.  With simple tools you will learn the basic ties, how to mix dyes and colors and how to finish your piece.  Dyes included.

Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel    SIGN-UP

Description:
If you have never or a “long time ago” thrown on the potter’s wheel you will be guided through the steps of “throwing” on the potter’s wheel using a “hands on” approach with demos and individual instruction. You will throw bowls and cylinder forms to make into vases and mugs. You will learn set-up and clean-up procedures to prepare you for a clay class or attending Mud Buddie Open Studio at the Petaluma Arts Center. If you choose to glaze and fire your work, you may attend a Mud Buddie Open Studio at the Arts Center to complete your project. You will be notified as to when your pieces are ready to claim.

Description:
Art Journaling is a wonderful art making process and creative practice for all ages and all skill levels. This is a basic introduction to art journaling. We will be working on water color paper and index cards to create small art journaling pages and elements.
Using paint, ink, mark making, text, paper, and tools to create texture and depth to create multi layered backgrounds on water color paper.  Use images, shapes and color to create a collage on index cards.  Journaling prompts and exercises to help connect to ourselves and get the creative juices going in words & poetry and add these to our pages.

Description: 
Students will learn to properly work with jump rings, stringing wire with beads, crimps, clasps, eye pins, cones and gemstone chain. Two wire-wrapping techniques will be learned. Tools, supplies and handouts will be provided. Bring a laptop or tablet if you have one available, as we will view videos of jewelry-making techniques.

Painting Furry Friends:  Loose & Expressive Painting Technique    SIGN-UP

Description:
Come paint your furry friends and have a blast doing it!  Paint loosely and expressively without fussy-ness.  Using watermedia, we will paint a few furry friends (fur not neccessary)  from your original photo or even a cute pet food ad., it doesn’t matter what your refernece is,  I’ll show you how to mix it up and make it your own.

Materials List:
Watermedia: Watercolors and a tube of white gouache OR acrylics, brushes (small, medium, large), watercolor paper, or canvas, a drawing tool – pencil, ink, whatever you prefer.
Colors – whatever you want to bring, but minimum of one red, yellow and blue as well as white is perfectly adequate.
Backing board if you are using paper. Bring tape to tape down paper.
**Palette – Needs to be at least 8 x 10 inches, larger is better. Can be a dinner size plate, or an official palette but you will enjoy your painting experience much more if you have room to not only lay out your paints, but have plenty of room to mix them. Disposable palettes are good for traveling.
A few brushes – Small medium and large.
Bring a PHOTOS of your beloved pets, or even magazine pics.
Water container, rag, a few paper towels. Apron? Old shirt?
A willingness to explore your inherent and unique creativity with open heart and spirit.
No experience necessary! But this class is also for experienced artists who wish to paint with greater freedom of expression.

Description: 
Flowers are beautiful, joyous, and lend themselves to infinite styles of painting.  Using watermedia- either watercolor with a tube of white gouache, or acrylics, we will paint a few florals from life and I’ll show you how to transform a magazine image or better yet, an original photo of flowers into a creative work of art.

Description: 
Lynn Wood, the pottery texture queen, comes to the Petaluma Art Center for a day long hands on clay handbuilding workshop. Working with soft slabs and templates folks will make a number of items. And of course texture will be involved! Everyone will complete a few slab projects and get a few templates to use that day and in the future. In addition, Lynn will reveal her secrets of designing and altering templates to use in clay. The tips will include some tradtional pottery techniques along with some of Lynn’s personal quirky tips. Description: 
Aimed at providing artists of all levels, the opportunity to explore new painting materials and methods with which they might transform and/or push the boundaries of their painting practice, techniques they might not have previously combined with their work.
Collage, ink and marble dust washes, pen and ink, group “drawing”, word association, carborundum and dry pigment, scale changes and spontaneous elements designed to increase the armoury of techniques used in students’ future painting practice.

Description: 
Have you ever wanted to make tableware by hand, but did not have time for a class? Come and try it out! You will make plates and dishes using slump and hump molds as well as press molds. You will decorate your tableware using underglazes, stamps, and texture mats. Pinch, coil and slab are the forming methods we will use. You will learn how to roll out clay using the slab roller as well as by hand. This workshop will prepare you for joining a class or attending Mud Buddie Open Studio at PAC. You may glaze your work and have it fired by attending a Mud Buddie Open Studio.

Italian street painting will be fun with pastels outside…..come join the fun. Each day will be filled with fun projects that will open your childs mind to new concepts and approaches. The first day consists of cartooning, cartoon strips, comic books, then we will draw still lifes, figure drawing. We will then start to learn techniques of painting.

Description:
This innovative approach to photography teaches youth basic photography skills while inviting them to learn more about themselves. It’s a child (or adolescent) scaled approach to what is sometimes called Contemplative Photography, in which the focus is on exploring the relationship with self, others and the natural world through the camera lens, without relying heavily on technique or expensive equipment. I’ve been developing and using this approach with youth age 8 to 18 for over a decade.

Description: 
Creativity and imagination are an important and valuable part of being human – one that often flows abundantly in early childhood, yet can diminish as children grow in a culture that often undervalues these qualities. Imagination Club invites children to fall in love with their own imagination and creativity, to discover it as a treasure they can carry with as they grow. In this week long adventure into their imagination, children engage in activities blending visual arts, creative writing, drama and movement games and connection with nature. The focus is developing imagination and creativity, valuing their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others, and growing their connection with the natural world.

Description: 
In this art camp we will ‘visit’ a different country each day. We’ll talk about the country’s culture, location and types of art found there. Then, we’ll do one or two art projects from that country. The countries represented this year are Mexico, Australia, Sweden, Africa and USA
Children, will learn repoussé from Mexico. This technique uses card board, foil paper and permanent markers to make ‘embossed’ snakes. From Australia, we’ll do a couple types of folk art from the Aboriginal people.
We’ll make traditional folk art horses from Sweden. From Africa, we learn about kente cloth and make masks. And from the USA, we’ll look at early american quilts and make our own designs with papers

Description:
During this camp week, we’ll we’ll learn about several artists who created Pop Art and create our own fabulous pieces of art. Day one is George Rodriguez of the famous Blue Dogs. This will be acrylic on canvas. Then we’ll take a look at Andy Warhol and print some repetitive images. Students will be encouraged to think of subjects that would make interesting pop art statements. Day three is Jasper Johns using tempera paints. Day four is Wayne Thiebaud- lollipops and cakes, using oil pastels and tempera paint.  Last is Keith Haring- one of my favorites. We’ll do some practice KH people and then make a large KH painting.

Description: 
Each day we’ll use different mediums to great art in the manor of famous artists. The artists we’ll learn about during this week are George Rodrigue, Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, Alexander Calder and Paul Klee. The blue dog painting will be acrylic on canvas. O’Keeffe will be watercolors. The Calder will be wire and flexible plastic sheeting. Klee will be multi media and the Van Gogh’s will be tempera paint on poster board. All students have time to create on their own in the styles of the masters.

Description:
At this camp, we will explore many aspects of color using a variety of mediums. On day one, we’ll talk about the spectrum and early pigments. We’ll discuss the color wheel and how artists use them. Using tempera paint, we’ll do some color mixing and make our own ‘wheel’ and learn about color value as well. Day two will be focusing on complimentary colors. I have a cut construction paper project and tempera project for this. Day three is working with watercolors and stresses color value. Day four is color/no color day. We’ll do a black and white project and a similar one using color. Day five, we’ll create a landscape using unusual color.

This basic class is a great way to establish a fun, personal creative practice. Students will learn the value of working in an art journal and explore a wide range of self expression. There will be opportunity to learn how to use various materials including paint, adhesives, graphic images, oil pastels and graphite as well as a variety of techniques, including painting, composition, mark-making, drawing, using imagery and hand lettering. All basic materials will be provided by the instructor although students are strongly encouraged to bring their own materials and look for mark making tools that they may already have that they would like to incorporate into their journal to make it more uniquely personal.
