Beyond the Round

Learn about how the technological developments and discoveries in ceramics of past cultures are still relevant today. Christa will cover how centuries of past civilizations inspire and influence her work. Her education and formal training honors these cultures and their ceramic traditions.

Japanese‐Style Pot Throwing
Lecturer: Cheryl Costantini of Nichibei Potters

Learning by doing is more than a mantra in Japan. It is the only true path according to ancient traditions. Cheryl will demonstrate various techniques used in Japanese style throwing, including throwing off the hump, sizing techniques, and cut off techniques.

Carving Clay

This intensive, hands‐on workshop will cover the design, carving, and production techniques developed by Lynne Meade over the last twelve years. You will learn through a slide show of Lynne’s work, demonstration, and hands‐on work in specific carving techniques and one‐on‐one instruction.

Crash Glass Mosaics
Instructor: Lisa Jean De Soto
Dates: January 29 and February 5, 2012
Time: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Cost: $112 Members, $125 Non‐members Materials: $12
Using recycled glass we will take mosaics to a new level. You will paint and embellish a wooden candleholder and unique flagstone rock; then attach pieces of tempered glass onto each of them in jigsaw puzzle style. You will learn a stress‐free grouting technique and leave class with twobeautiful finished pieces for your home. Please wear old clothing or bring a work apron.

Miniature Head Sculpting
Instructor: Carol Wedemeyer
Date: February 11‐12, 2012
Time: 12:00 – 4:00 pm
Cost: $112 Members, $125 Non‐members Materials: $10
In this workshop you will practice feature studies (eyes, nose, and mouth) with an emphasis on emotional gesture. You will learn anatomical proportions and engage in discussion on the beauty of abstraction. In addition to modeling the facial features, the actual construction of the bust incorporates slabs, pinching and coiling.

Making Aspirational Vessels
Instructor: Nuala Creed
Dates: February 18, 19, 26, March 4
Times: 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Cost: $103 Members, $115 Non‐members Materials: $60 (includes a 25lb bag of clay and use of basic tools and several glazes)
Participants will learn basic hand‐building techniques, pinching, coiling, slab building, while getting inspired through demonstrations, books, and hands‐on‐work with clay. The goal is to make and glaze a closed vessel form that can hold the maker’s aspirations for the year. These vessels can be simple or elaborate.

Making A Slip Slab Ensō

A demonstration to make slabs using porcelain slip, thin sticks, dry cleaning plastic, and a rectangle of plaster. Instruction includes what makes clay a slip, how to colorize it and form vessels.
