Oyster Farm: Photography by Evvy Eisen

Reception: 2011-03-26, 4 - 7pm  |  Open: 2011-03-25  |  Close: 2011-05-15

This exhibition focuses on the people of the historic Drake’s Bay Oyster Company located in the Point Reyes National Seashore in western Marin County.

Currently the center of a land use controversy, the farm may not remain in operation after its lease ends in 2012.  While opposing positions that divide the Marin community have been argued at the state and national levels, Eisen’s exhibition does not deal with the complex issues involved in these disagreements. Rather, it focuses on the people who work at the oyster farm and face an uncertain future.

Eisen’s work illustrates a connection between the people involved and the community they serve, putting a human face on what has become abstract and theoretical.

Concurrently on exhibit in the Arts Center’s Community Gallery is Field Days: At Work & At Play – photographs by Paige Green and text by Jonah Raskin. Bay Area writer Jonah Raskin spent a year working on local, organic farms, at farmers’ markets, and in kitchens. His book, Field Days tells the story of his journey; Petaluma photographer, Paige Green, followed him around also went on her own quest.
